… If you were to come over for a cup of coffee…
… I would probably start with telling you how I am not ready for school to start. I feel like I never had a summer this year and now… here we are. Getting ready to embark on the busiest time of the year. It’s always such a challenge getting back into the swing of the school season. And I really wished we just had a few more weeks of summer.
… I would probably ask where you stand on it? Sometimes I feel that parents take school so seriously now a days. Don’t get me wrong…. I love school and I want my kids to realize the importance of it. But sometimes I feel like they took all the fun out of it. And how is my kid supposed to fall in love with learning if we moved over to all these crazy standardized tests and hours of homework?
… Which brings me to how much I hate when teachers give homework every night in elementary school. I think its ridiculous. We were spoiled with such an amazing kindergarten teacher at Meehan. She was truly the best. And she focused so much on learning through play at that level. and Maddux picked up on SO much that way. And I was so appreciative of the way he was learning. He was genuinely excited about it and constantly telling us everything he learned that week and it was fun as a parent to see your child so worked up on learning.
… But sometimes I find myself kind of not … fitting in… when it comes to moms talking about school. I find that often parents believe the homework correlates back to how great the school is… and sometimes I think… well why do they need the homework? They should be learning that in class… sure we need to practice reading at night. I fully believe that. I also think its important to keep math fresh but maybe not every night. I think kids have to find things fun at this age and if its work… just work and tests and scores… its not as effective. and I think we as parents are sometimes so competitive we push for these things without realizing the damage.
… and don’t get me wrong I am married to a teacher. So I get what they do… and I understand how much work it is… and I think being married to a teacher makes me think about things differently. My husband is truly amazing at what he does. Between coaching and teaching. His students and athletes adore him and every single time we go out in public … a pre teen approaches genuinely excited to see him and tell him all about what they have been up to. and I think that says so much. Especially at the age he teaches… that 6th/7th grade stage where they barely like anyone… let alone their teachers. but he often talks about how making learning fun is the key to getting kids to pick it up. He has been recognized often on his approach and to me it’s always something I find interesting…
.. So I guess my point is. I want to make it clear that I am never knocking a single teacher. I just hope this school year we get a teacher that recognizes the age of their students. My kid is smart. In my opinion he is the smartest kid on this planet (because well… that’s what we believe as moms) but honestly… he’s bright and he catches on quick. But he’s imaginative and has such a curious way about him I hope that the teacher sees that and keeps that spark. I worry about it getting lost among standardized testing and scores and everything else the teachers battle.
… I guess for me… I would wonder where are you at on this subject. Are we opposites? Are you all about the homework and feel that seeing what they are working on and doing work sheets every night is what works for you and your kid? Or are you over here with me… wondering when did school become so competitive?
… And moving on now from my soapbox….
… I finished Stranger Things. It was awesome. Did you watch it? We watched it in 2 days. Addicted. I am so sad it’s over. I can’t help it. I love TV. I am desperately awaiting for The Walking Dead. I need to know who it was. Who do you think? I have read online theories.. of course we all fear it’s one of our favorites. and really that is all. I mean it cant be Glen or Darryl right? The fan base would be in an uproar. so I just don’t see them doing that. Or maybe I just keep telling myself that.
… Anyway. Stranger Things? Thoughts? I would say normally I’m not a huge Sci-Fi fan but this was different. And it has such an E.T. feel to it. Did you get that too?
… So what are your back to school traditions? How do you get organized? How do you stay organized? Any first day traditions?
… In house updates… we have been working on our coffee bar all week. It is massive. I love it. but we are making it up as we go so it takes some time. But I am hoping we have it done sometime this weekend. I need to hide some of the chaos below and I want a barn door but am struggling with finding some DIY hardware since the cabinet is small and I cant find any hardware under 5ft on the internet. We did get hardware on for the kitchen and I finished painting the cabinets. So we are still trucking along on the projects.
… I am getting ready to share Hudson’s room next week on the blog. It’s finally finished and I am excited to share how it turned out.
… And really I am just distracted by school beginning and outside of that and daydreaming about pumpkin spiced lattes I don’t have too much this week… so I think I’ll get a head start on that weekend to do list laying around…
… Until next week Sweet Friend…
